*****

Over the past eighteen months since closing Johnetta Jones' case, Kimani had often thought about her. Johnetta was her biggest success and her biggest failure. Johnetta had done everything she had to do to get her sons back, but at the same time, she hadn't done anything to find herself. Kimani had wanted Johnetta to care about herself as much as she cared about her sons. That was the only way she'd make it long term, Kimani was sure of that.

Kimani had tried to get Johnetta to read. She'd given her books about black women who had walked in similar shoes and how they'd come to know and love themselves and how they'd turned sand into sugar. But Johnetta wasn't interested. If it didn’t pertain to her boys, she didn't want to know anything about it.

Kimani knew that was a mistake and she knew Johnetta's sons would suffer too. Kimani knew this from experience. She herself was still suffering. Her father had always been strong, before the drugs. And having recovered, he was strong once again. But her mother...she was a different story. Her mother had never truly gotten it. She’d never found herself. And now she was gone.

Kimani was a realist. She knew that once Johnetta got her boys back, she would be of no use to Johnetta and truthfully, she never thought she'd hear from her again. But in the minutes since she'd hung up the phone, Kimani was still caught off guard.

What does she want? Kimani wondered. Her instincts...and Johnetta's words told her that it wasn't good.

As promised, only ten minutes passed before Johnetta walked into her office. The two women hugged, but then, Johnetta sat down and began to tell her story.

Kimani listened, shaking her head in one place, taking notes at another point. The entire time she listened to Johnetta, she thought about her own background. She'd gone to school to be a defense attorney – that's what she'd always wanted to be.

But then, when she was an undergrad at Georgia State, she interned at Northside Woman’s Day shelter on the Westside, near downtown. There, she counseled and worked with women who truly needed her. These women had no one to fight their causes and the law damn-sure wasn't going to protect them. So it was a natural progression for her to gravitate over to Legal Aid once she’d passed the bar.

In the years since she'd graduated, she'd only worked at Legal Aid. She didn't have one day of any defense experience.

But after hearing Johnetta’s story there was only one thing she could do. She had to help her.

It was after-hours, but luck and blessings were on her side because Kimani was able to talk to the DA and two judges. And before the clock struck nine, she and Johnetta Jones left her office to meet up with the DA at the main DeKalb County precinct on Memorial Drive.

A deal had been struck – a deal that would cost Johnetta at least twenty-five years of her life.
